Darkest Night, Nearest Dawn

Ode to the Night

Darkest Night, Nearest Dawn

Darkest night,

So velvety smooth,

Star-studded with pinpricks of luminosity.

Crowned in majesty

By lunar’s lesser light,

She spins her dance round the cerulean marble.

The hour of secrets, when a hush descends…

Softly spoken, nearly always whispered,

Hands cupped round ears against cheek.

We whisper of days ending tangled in velour,

Of whiskey-soaked melodies and moonlit serenades,

Of monuments raised to past poor choices.

Reflections under witness are we…

Stars beyond number, bearing and being,

We the seen, and they the seeing.

Right before we close our eyes,

We turn and direct to the Father

The day’s end and hope’s unformed morrow.

Darkest night once held my fear;

Now faith commands eternity,

For the Reward draws near.
